The DShK 38/46, first introduced in as the Model 38 in1929, was the Soviet Union’s first heavy machinegun. It was initially used as an anti-aircraft weapon but then was adapted to turrets of tanks and wheeled mounts for ground forces. It saw widespread use during WWII and though most modern armies have replaced it with newer designs, it was used by IRA forces to shoot down a British helicopter in 1988 and continues to be used current wars in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Turkey.
